Tendon strain or ligament sprains are the most common cause of groin pain, especiallly after sport but a bone fracture, a pinched nerve, a urinary tract infection, hernia or 'referred' kidney stone pain can also be responsible.
As you didn't mention any sporting or exertion-related event, I'd ask you to visit the doctor in order that you can eliminate the possibility of kidney stones.
