First of all, I think it is sensible to consult a doctor or physiotherapist in this instance to see if they can determine what is causing your discomfort.
In the meantime, if the problem only develops at night it is worth considering how your sleeping position, pillow and mattress could be contributing to your pain. A mattress should be changed every ten years or so and lying on your back or side are generally better sleeping positions for anyone with back pain. It can be quite difficult to find the right pillow, but if it is specifically your upper back that is uncomfortable, this may suggest your pillow is too high or too hard.
In addition, you may find it helpful to try some natural remedies such as a hot water bottle. Arnica Gel can also be applied directly to the area and provides soothing, anti-inflammatory effects.
