I can't reassure you 100%, as we cannot diagnose but if your doctor has only suggested pain killers then it shouldn't be more than nerve or muscle pain.
If it doesn't worsen with exertion then I would be happy too.
Can you try some big rotations of the shoulders back and forth for 30 seconds in each direction, followed by the neck and upper back exercises as shown in my video?
I also wonder if you've noticed whether the pain is brought on by any particular activity, a long drive for example?
