I'm afraid I can't diagnose your knee problem, though it sounds like the symptoms typical of osteoarthritis.
In terms of remedies to help the pain and stiffness, I would wholeheartedly recommend applying Atrogel® at least twice a day and perhaps taking some Atrosan® Devils Claw tablets. Neither will interfere with any medicines the doctor may have given you.
The Atrogel can help very quickly, sometimes in a few minutes (depending on the level of pain) and the Atrosan over 4-8 weeks but they work in quite different and complimentary ways so the overall effect is excellent.
You may have heard of glucosamine sulphate tablets, which do work very well indeed for joints a little higher up the body but the knees are very hard working and respond very slowly to glucosamine tablets, so by all means try it too but be patient as results may not be apparent for 12 weeks or so..
Best wishes
