Just how healthy are your muscles and joints?
Answer our questions and find out if your flexibility is compromised.
Find out how flexible you areThe neck is a very sensitive area of the body so I don't tend to recommend doing anything too vigorous here as there is quite a high likelihood of incurring an injury! However, you can improve the strength of the muscles in the neck with some very simple movements.
- Practice drawing circles with your nose. Start with drawing a very small circle and work up to drawing one the size of a dinner plate. Reduce the size of the circles then repeat in the other direction, gradually drawing circles with your nose that get bigger and then smaller in size. Keep your movements very slow as you do this exercise.
- Lower your left ear to your left shoulder and hold for a few seconds. Lower your right ear to your right shoulder and hold. Keep the shoulders relaxed and repeat five times on each side.
- Another neck exercise you may wish to try can be done sitting down. Place your left hand on your right thigh then twist your body to look over your right shoulder. Place your right hand behind your back until you feel a nice stretch. Repeat on the other side.
I like to practice these kinds of movements a few times a day, particularly if I find myself sitting down for long periods. They are all exercises that I have discovered in doing yoga so you might want to look into doing this if you find these movements helpful.
