There are many things that may contribute to this kind of problem, such as your sleeping position, a pillow that's too high and even an old mattress.
One of the best ways to sleep if you suffer from back pain is on your back with a pillow propped under the knees. Mattresses should ideally be changed every 10 years are so. If yours is quite firm, this could be a factor in your pain.
I would consider each of these points and see if you can make any changes. You may also find that stretching in the evening and in the morning helps a little with the pain.
