Yes, eating too many sweets can definitely cause sleeping problems (unfortunately)!
Sweets cause a rapid rise in your blood sugar level, which may give you a temporary burst of energy, but this is then followed by an equally rapid 'crash' in blood sugar levels, leaving you tired or lethargic and then craving sugar which starts the cycle again.....
Peaks and troughs in blood sugar like this have an unbalancing effect on the stress chemicals in the body, and you will start producing adrenaline as your body tries to deal with the instability. As adrenaline's job is to keep us awake and alert, too much of it, and at the wrong time, will definitely keep you awake at night, or sometimes it causes people to wake up suddenly in the early hours of the morning.
So I would suggest avoiding sugar as much as you can. It can be difficult to adjust at first, as your body is so used to it, and you will crave it, but in the long run you will feel so much better - sugar will affect mood and general energy levels, as well as sleep.
Ask in your local health food shop for good alternatives, such as dried fruit, and if you are struggling with cravings ask in there for a supplement of the mineral Chromium, as this can help.
You can also try Jan de Vries Craving Essence, which helps increase the ability to feel more in control and help you combat those craving habits.
I hope this helps,
Amy
