What are the first signs of perimenopause?
Typically, the first signs are changes in your period cycle. Are your periods getting heavier or lighter? Are you seeing more clots or a change in blood colour? Have there been any alterations to your cycle length or regularity? Is your 28-day cycle now 24 days or 32 days? Is it different every month?
Also, are you putting on weight even though there have been no changes to your diet or exercise?
Do you have hormonal symptoms that are different or new? Trouble sleeping? Mood changes that are not normal for you? Are you feeling more stressed than usual? Do you have unexplained anxiety or aches and pains or painful breasts or headaches? Are you feeling tired all the time?
Often early perimenopause signs are worsening PMS symptoms. Oestrogen levels waver and ovulation, the release of an egg every month, can get a bit irregular. This affects progesterone levels because you need an oestrogen spike, ovulation, and a development of corpus luteum for that calming progesterone spike, in the second half of the cycle. The body responds by firing out higher levels of oestrogen to rev up and jolly off (push out) the release of your eggs.
The end result is a hormone imbalance of oestrogen dominance compared to progesterone. A cycle that is shorter and heavier bleeds. Moods can get tempestuous.
If you're not on hormonal medication, the herb Agnus castus can be useful for PMS symptoms like mood swings, cramps, bloating and breast tenderness. Always read the patient information leaflet.
