60 seconds in menopause

What helps with menopause bloating? This is such a common symptom. I get asked about it all the time.

One of the reasons this can happen is that our transit time (the time the food takes to get down to the bowel) takes a lot longer as digestion become more sluggish during perimenopause and menopause. So, our food just sits in the gut for longer, where it ferments, and produces gases, which then causes bloating.

What can help?

Look out for your trigger foods. Carbohydrates are one of the biggest culprits. So, that is things like your bread, your pasta, your rice, your biscuits, cakes, etc. Maybe try going on a low-carb diet that can often treat symptoms really quickly.

Remember to drink plenty of water to keep everything moving nice and smoothly through your digestive system.

Extra Tip: Keep a food and symptom diary for a few weeks to help you identify any food triggers. Note down what you are eating and when you are eating and then record when you experience bloating. This can help you identify any patterns that could be causing bloating.

Bitter herbs such as dandelion or artichoke can be really helpful, and a good probiotic can also be helpful for bloating and other digestive problems.
