Dry Eyes and Perimeopause
Are dry eyes a symptom of perimenopause? Well, this eye problem can crop up during perimenopause and cause them to feel gritty, burning, and stinging. They can get more sensitive, inflamed, puffy, and bloodshot looking.
What causes dry eyes?
Now, oestrogen plays a role in keeping the body lubricated and the natural drop in perimenopause can result in dryness that affects the eyes. Other factors might be blocked oil ducts, allergies, medication, underlying health issues like Sjogren’s syndrome, and nutritional deficiencies.
What can help?
It's been one of my symptoms, and I found a couple of things to help. I use these Extra Moisturising Eye Drops with the herb Eyebright, morning and evening. They contain a generous amount of hyaluronic acid to give the eyes extra moisture during this time.
I also do lots of blinking and looking away from the screen to rest my eyes. I drink plenty of water to help me stay hydrated and I include good oils in my diet, like flaxseed.
During perimenopause and menopause, Eileen (A.Vogel's menopause coach) also recommends taking a Sea Buckthorn Oil supplement to relieve dryness in all parts of the body, including for dry eyes.
