Heart health in perimenopause and menopause
As the heart can be greatly affected during perimenopause and menopause, it's no surprise the 2023 World Menopause Day theme focuses on cardiovascular health!
Here are 3 ways perimenopause and menopause can affect your heart:
- It can increase your risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes
- It can increase your blood pressure without you being aware of anything going on
- It can cause heart palpitations.
How to help support your heart health during perimenopause and menopause
It’s very important to look after your heart, especially at this time. Here are a few simple things I recommend:
- Lots of regular exercise. Preferably something that gets your heart beat up such as aerobic exercises to keep your heart nice and strong and working well.
- Get your blood pressure checked. Don't be paranoid. Don't do it every week or every day. Once every six months is absolutely ample.
- Look at your diet. Include plenty of heart-healthy foods in your diet, such as good protein, healthy fats, and lots of vegetables and fruit, as well as healthy grains.
