This is a very good question and one that has exercised the minds of many people over the years.
The first thing to look at would probably be diet. Make sure to eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, as these are packed full of essential nutrients that the immune system requires to function well – including vitamin c, vitamin D and zinc. As well as this, make sure your diet is full of complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and lean protein for overall good digestion and wellbeing. Avoid sugar where possible, and reduce your intake of processed foods and alcohol.
Stress also has a detrimental effect on the immune system, so it’s important to reduce this where possible. Make sure to take some time each day to relax – whether it’s a warm bath, a good book or some gentle exercise like yoga. Think about other areas of your life that may be causing stress – work, finances, young children or commuting – and try to take steps to reduce this stress.
Echinacea has also been traditionally used for many years to strengthen the immune system, so this could be something to consider taking if you think your immune system is a bit vulnerable.
