You've probably heard about blue light and the damage it can have on things like your sleep-wake cycle and your eyes. Your eyes are able to block out certain light waves, such as UV rays from the sun, but almost all blue light directly reaches your retina.
My top tips for using your smart phone or tablet safely are:
1. Avoid using these in the dark, such as late at night when you're in bed. This can strain your eyes and cause blurred vision and migraines.
2. Use 'night mode' settings to dull the brightness and hue of the screen. Check your phone settings or use Google to find step-by-step instructions on how to dull your screen so it puts less pressure on your eyes.
3. Try the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look away from your phone or tablet and focus on an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This will give your eyes a much-needed break from working or scrolling through Facebook.
4. Limit time on devices at home. Try to avoid mindlessly scrolling through your phone or tablet by giving yourself some device-free time during the evening. This is particularly important for children as their eyes are more sensitive to blue light than adults.
