All men should have a prostate gland. This enlarges gradually with age and 50% of men over 50 in the Western world will show some symptoms such as needing to go to the toilet more often, poor stream or dribbling.
The diagnosis of an enlarged prostate is made by a doctor using a procedure known as digital rectal examination – in this, the size of the gland can be assessed.
In addition, most doctors will also do a blood test in order to make sure the enlargement is not due to prostate cancer.
