Check nowThe prostate gland is positioned just in front of your rectum (back passage) and can be felt on rectal examination. It involves the doctor briefly inserting a finger into your rectum to feel for potential abnormalities such as enlarged prostate (BPH).
The prostate gland tends to grow larger with age, it may squeeze the urethra and cause problems in passing urine. Self examination is not recommended.
A doctor will be trained to recognise an enlarged prostate just by feel during such an examination.
