A holistic approach to nutrition
I'm constantly reading research and wanted to share something I'd read recently with you. I believe nutrition is central to good health, but we can also often use nutrition to successfully support other healthy habits.
What is this secret ingredient that could offer so many benefits?
So, imagine I told you there was something that could help with all of these important areas of health:
- Obesity / favourable body composition
- Healthy Cholesterol levels
- Healthy Blood pressure
- Protecting against depression
- Protecting against anxiety
- Protecting against end disease states/life expectancy 1
Everyone would be buying it, right? So, what is it?
Sleep!
Yes, sleep. And if you read into it, there’s actually way more benefits than that, but this was the summary of this specific research (1).
But I suppose many of the other benefits of sleep that I'm aware of as a nutritionist, including positive blood sugar control, reduced cravings, more stable mood, better resilience to stress, more stable energy levels, favourable cognitive functions etc.
They all really feed into these larger themes, our outcomes which were looked at in this research.
Sleep, really isn't something we want to overlook
But, sufficient sleep. Wow. It really is a lifestyle habit we don’t want to overlook, right?!
Sleep really is so protective, so restorative, so we really want to get it right and reap all the benefits.
So, I’m going to make a part 2 to this and detail all my top tips on how to achieve good sleep with the help of nutrition, herbs, and some practical tips to try too, so stay tuned.
