What is PMDD?
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a chronic health condition experience by women, that can cause severe mood changes, plus physical symptoms. PMDD typically crops up in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle - basically in the week or two before a period is due. It's a more severe form of PMS.
What should you do if you're affected, or suspect you might have PMDD?
I’d always recommend someone with suspected PMDD to go their doctor in the first instance – this is in order to try and get a diagnosis - everyone needs this so we can all properly understand what we’re working with.
Then, if you have a diagnosis, depending on what your doctor recommends or prescribes, it might then also be suitable for someone with PMDD to get further support from a nutritionist.
How could a nutritionist help with a case of PMDD?
Qualified nutritionists can help to formulate personalised plans which include advice around diet, lifestyle and supplements in order to help with the symptoms of PMDD.
Ultimately, a nutritionist would want to try and understand some of the likely root causes of PMDD, such as hormone imbalance, inflammation and/or nutrient deficiencies - this is why some initial checks with your doctor are also helpful to help gather as much up to date information about your health as possible. The ultimate aim would be to help manage your symptoms, often through a multi-disciplinary approach.
